What is Misal?

Misal in Marathi means Mixture in English and its a spicy curry prepared from moth beans, spices, onion, garlic, ginger and chillies. The curry topped with chiwda, shev, chopped onions, coriander, green chillies and served with a dash of lemon. This spicy mixture of sprouted lentils is eaten with Pav or Bread.

Misal is the most popular staple food in Maharashtra.

Misal pav is very common breakfast dish served across small hotels in Maharashtra.

Misal mainly consists of two parts – the thick spicy sprouted mixture is called Ussal and the watery gravy is called Rassa. With these main ingredients, various hotels or locals top it up with Farsan, chopped onion, chivda, coriander, and a piece of lemon. Further you will need a Pav (Bread) which some of the hotels toast with butter (but only 10%)

If you are new to Misal dish, ask the hotel owner to tone down the spice content while you order and he will adjust the spice percentage!
