Pune Ganesh Festival
Dagdusheth Halwai Ganesh is the origin of Public celebrations of Ganesh Festival of Pune and Maharashtra.
The story of starting Ganesh festival is closely related to the great Indian Nationalist leader Lokmanya Tilak who was close friend of Dagdusheth Halwai.
While witnessing the construction of the temple, it dawned on Lokmanya Tilak about an idea of public celebrations of Ganesh festival as a part of efforts to bring people together for the freedom struggle. And that is how the Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav (Public celebrations of Ganesh festival) started in Pune and later spread all over Maharashtra as well as other parts of India.
In the year 1952, the responsibility of organizing the Sarvajanik Ganesh festival at Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati temple officially fell upon Tatyasaheb and his friends. On which Tatyasaheb with his associates like Mamasaheb Rasane, Adv. Shankarrao Suryavanshi and K. D. Rasane executed the Ganesh festival with meticulous planning and professionalism.
Since 1952, the festival is celebrated in same enthusiasm by the trust.

Shaniwar Wada is an ancient Peswa Palace fort situated at the heart of Pune.
This historical place tops in the list of must visit tourist places in Pune.
Built in 1732 AD, Shaniwar Wada was main power center of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire until 1818 AD when the Peshwas surrendered to the British after the Third Anglo-Maratha War.
Shaniwar Wada was originally built as the residence of the Peshwas. The foundation of the mansion was laid by Bajirao Ist (First) in 1730 AD and the construction was completed in 1732 AD.
It is said that the foundation was carried out on a Saturday, hence the palace got the name ‘Shaniwar’ (Saturday), ‘Wada’ (residence).
Influenced by Mughal design and architecture, Shaniwar Wada represents the skillful craftsmanship of Maratha artisans and boasts about 21 feet tall main door that faces North.
Unfortunately, the seven storied structure was largely destroyed in 1828 CE by a fire accident. Only the remains can be seen now like the fortification walls with five gateways and nine bastions that enclosed the entire palace.
The principal gate is called Dilli Darwaja (Delhi Gate), the other gates are called Mastani or Alibahadur Darwaja, Khidki Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja and Narayan Darwaja.
There is a statue of Bajirao Ist (First) on a horse in front of Shaniwar Wada.
The fort stands amidst a beautiful landscape which contains water channels and different shaped ponds. Inside one can see Ganesh Mahal, Rang Mahal, Aarsa (Mirror) Mahal, Hasti Dant Mahal, Diwan Khana and Fountains.
The walls in the palace were painted with scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata. A sixteen petal lotus-shaped fountain stands reminiscent of the exquisite work of those times.
The historical structure is now maintained by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Sarasbaug Ganpati Temple
Timings: 5 AM to 8 PM.
Sarasbaug Ganapathi Temple is an ancient Hindu temple situated at Sarasbaug in Pune.
The temple is one of the oldest temples in Pune and also one of the top pilgrimage places in Pune. A sacred ground of faith for millions of devotees in Pune and around the world
Soon after completion of Shree Devdeveshwar Temple on Parvati hill in 18th century, Shrimant Nanasaheb Peshwa decided to construct a lake at the foothills of Parvati as a part of beautification.
An island of about 25,000 sq. feet area was retained in the middle of this lake. Later on, a beautiful garden was created on this island.
In 1784 AD, Shrimant Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa built a small temple in Sarasbaug and installed the idol of Sri Siddhivinayak Gajanan.
Popularly known as the Talyatla Ganapathi because of its island position in the midst of a lake, Sarasbaug Temple is dedicated lord Ganesh. The temple is surrounded by water pond from all sides.
The presiding deity’s idol is small but very beautiful and divine. The original idol was made of kurund stone which cost only 10 anas then. Since then the idol has been changed twice, once in 1882 AD and also in 1990 AD, the later idols were being crafted by Rajasthani artisans.
The deity is called as Siddhivinayak because its trunk turns to the right.
A small museum was added to the place in the year 1995 AD displays hundreds of idols of Lord Ganesh.
The Sarasbaug Ganapathi Temple is run under the auspices of Shree Devdeveshwar Sansthan, Parvati and Kothrud.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple is the rock-cut cave temple was carved out in the 8th century AD, during the Rashtrakutas Period and is located on Jangli Maharaj road in Shivajinagar area of Pune.
Maintained by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) it is one of the top places of sightseeing in Pune. It has been declared as a protected monument by the government of Maharashtra.
The temple is also known as Panchaleshvara or Bamburde Temple and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Made of basalt rock, the cave temple is believed to have been cut out from a single rock. The cave temple bears resemblance with the rock-cut temples of Ellora.
A linga, the symbol of Shiva, is housed in the sanctum, which is a cube-shaped room about 3 to 4 meter high. On each side of the sanctum, two smaller cells are present. In the principle worship area, sculptures of Sita, Rama, Laxman and a host of other Hindu Gods and Goddesses are located.
A circular Nandi Mandapa, with its umbrella shaped canopy supported by square pillars, is located in front of the cave. This is one of the peculiar structures of Pataleshwar.
Due to a fault line found at the back of the sanctum sanctorum, which made additional sculpting unsafe, the temple was left incomplete. Outside the basalt entryway, a brass temple bell hangs.
The complex of this cave temple is lit with thousands of oil lamps on the occasion of Tripuri Pournima (the full moon day of the Kartik Month).
The famous Jangli Maharaj Temple is also located very close to this monument.
Near the temple lies a museum that is enlisted in the Guinness Book of World Records. A grain of rice that has around 5,000 characters inscribed on it is the prominent highlight of the museum.
Lal Mahal

Entry Fee: Rs. 5 per person
Lal Mahal is a RED colored palace located Located in the Kasbapeth area, just near to the Shaniwar Wada in Pune.
Again this is also one of the top tourist places and famous monuments in Pune, and a must visit.
This is the same place where Shivaji Maharaj cut Shaistekhan’s fingers when he was trying to escape from one of the windows of the Lal Mahal.
Raje Shivaji’s father Shahaji Raje Bhosale established this palace for his wife Jijabai and son in 1630 CE.
The original Lal Mahal was built with the idea of rejuvenating the recently razed Pune city when Dadoji Kondev entered the city along with Bal Shivaji and his mother, Jijabai.
Raje Shivaji stayed here for several years until his first victorious feat of capturing the Torna Fort in 1645 CE.
Towards the end of the 17th Century CE, the Lal Mahal fell into ruins and was eventually razed to the ground as a result of various attacks on the city.
The current Lal Mahal was rebuilt by the PMC. Construction started in 1984 and was completed in 1988. The new Lal Mahal was not rebuilt in the same fashion as the original one and there is not much information found about the area and structure of the original Lal Mahal.
The present day Lal Mahal is more of a museum that has a vast collection of huge oil-paintings that depicts significant life events of Shivaji Maharaj. This includes a statue of Rajmata Jijabai, a big map of Maharashtra highlighting the forts of Shivaji, and a sculpture portraying little Shivaji holding a golden plough together with Jijabai and Dadoji Kondev. All these things, events, and the architecture of the Lal Mahal remind us of the glory and bravery of Shivaji Maharaj. The popular Jijamata Garden is now a recreational park for kids.
