NEW IRCTC Next Generation ticket booking system login screen
7 tips for train ticket booking, cancellation and journey on IRCTC next generation new website:
Well as number of my blog readers are facing problems in using this new websites, I decided to post few Tips on how to book tickets, cancel tickets, find out trains etc on this system. I am sure this will be helpful to you during advance booking which will be opening for the Diwali vacations or Ganesh festivals coming up soon.
My small but useful tips will help all Indian Railways passengers, tatkal ticket passengers and those who want to travel in a group:
Tip 1: Check probability of wait-listed ticket
When you book your ticket and it is showing as waitlisted, in that case you can use a new tool introduced by IRCTC on the e-ticketing website, so you will be able to see the probability of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed.
I am sure this will be more helpful since based on the probability calculations done by the back-end software, to help you make a more informed choice than before. (no more asking to friends what he feels on the confirmation of tickets!)
Tip 2: Book multiple trips in same month (max 12)
For travelers who wants to use the train services frequently during the same month, IRCTC has added an option of booking up to 12 tickets from a login ID in a month.
The base limit is 6 tickets per month, which can be increased up to 12 tickets in a month once you link Aadhaar card to your IRCTC account.
Tip 3: Tatkal ticket booking
First thing is to keep in mind is that the tatkal ticket booking facility is available on first come first serve basis, hence you should make sure to keep all the necessary documents ready.
Second thing that you can check the Tatkal ticket booking timings from IRCTC website instead of asking here and there.
Just for information, online tatkal tickets can be booked on the opening day for AC class from 10:00 AM onwards and for Non- AC class from 11:00 AM onwards.
Note : During booking of tatkal tickets, keep all the required documents handy including Aadhaar or any other ID card.
Tip 4: Group ticket bookings
Remember that bulk bookings are not allowed online through the New IRCTC website or mobile app.
For group size of more than 6 people, you can repeat the procedure multiple times. However, since the website load is high, you may not get remaining seats/berths in the same coach!
So if you want to avoid split seats and get all team in the same coach, you can do so by visiting the ticket booking center nearby like for me it is Pune Railway station.
Tip 5: Food from Menu on Rails App
Now you can check the list of food items along with their prices on ‘Menu on Rails’ app. This will allow you planning if you wish to buy food or carry your own as well as know the budget in advance.
The app will show you the list to passengers who are travelling in Mail or Express trains including Rajdhanis, Shatabdis, Humsafars, Duronto, Tejas and Gatiman Express trains.
Tip 6: Suggest alternative trains option – VIKALP
There is all new option called as the VIKALP which will allow you finding an alternate trains for the route and allot you confirmed seats accordingly.
This new option Vikalp is a boon to those who are trying to book tickets on last minute, if case you are not able to get the desired train, the Indian railway new system will do the work for you, it will find and suggest alternative trains as well as allow you book them in one go.
Tip 7: Refund of tickets
Indian Railways has extensive complex set of rules for refund of tickets.
The rules are applicable as per the situations of asking for cancellation and are mostly time bound.
So it is important when you file the refund claim with railways, so if you are planning to cancel your train ticket, then do read complete document of refund policy and apply properly so that you will not loose any money.
3) IRCTC refund rules 2019
Scenario 1: Your wait-listed train ticket not confirmed.
Scenario 2: You changed the journey plan so now you are not able to travel.
Scenario 3: Cancellation of tickets before the reservation chart is prepared or late running of train services etc.
There are set of rules which allow refund of entire or partial amount or no refund at all by Indian railways.
Important thing to note :
Please note that there are prescribed time limits under which the TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) has to be filed to claim a refund. If you don’t respect it, you may not get any refund at all!
Here are different conditions under which the ticket booking amount will not be refunded to passengers by Indian Railways:
1) Tatkal Ticket cancellation after confirmation:
In case of cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets, the Indian railways does not grant any refund.
However, in special cases like contingent cancellation or waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellation, the charges can be deducted as per the existing railway rules and you may get a partial refund.
2) No refund on confirmed ticket:
If you have confirmed ticket and want to cancel it, you must cancel ticket or file a TDR online upto four hours before the scheduled departure of the train. else you will loose all your ticket money.
3) No refund for Reservation against Cancellation tickets
No refund given on RAC (Reservation against Cancellation) e-tickets in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online upto thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.
4) Waitlisted i-tickets cancellation
No refund will be given on RAC or wait-listed ticket after thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.
You can cancel the wait-listed tickets at the computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter upto thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train. This is irrespective of the distance.
5) Late running trains: more than 3 hours
This is the most important part to note, if your train is running late than three hours and you did not travel, no refund given by the Indian Railways if the ticket has been cancelled or surrendered or if the request is filed online after the actual departure of train.
No refund will be granted in case of train running more than three hours late and the TDR is filed with this very reason after the actual departure of the train.
6) Ticket booked in premium special trains:
Cancellation of CNF/RAC ticket booked in premium special trains is not allowed.
However, the ticket can be cancelled only if the train is cancelled. In such a case the refund will be granted by PRS system as per extant Railway Refund Rules.
7) Partially confirmed e-tickets:
No refund on partially confirmed e-Ticket against which none of the passengers has traveled and if TDR is filed after 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.
In case of a partially used reserved ticket of Rajdhani Express train, Shatabdi Express train and Jan Shatabdi Express train, Indian Railways does not grant any refund of the amount to passengers.
8) Lost or misplaced I-Ticket:
Refund of money is not granted against lost or misplaced train tickets.
Only way is to report loss to railway authorities so that any misuse of tickets can be avoided.
However, in case of lost, mutilated, torn, confirmed or RAC train tickets, the passenger can ask for a duplicate ticket and can travel on the accommodation reserved for him/her as per the existing railway rules.
9) In case the passenger has not traveled due to ticket in RAC after chart preparation:
No refund of fare will be granted on RAC e-tickets in case the ticket is not cancelled or the TDR not been filed online up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.
10) Reservation chart already prepared at originating or previous remote location:
No refund on a ticket with confirmed reservation in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online upto four hours before the scheduled departure of the train.
No refund will be given on RAC e-tickets in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.

This new IRCTC next generation system is not user friendly at all. A common man cannot access this at all. It takes hell of time. It appears railway administration has knowingly made it complicated.
